1 dead, several injured in stabbing attack in Shillong
One died while nine others were injured after they were stabbed by miscreants in Shillong on Saturday.
The incident has taken place in the busy Iewduh market, police said. The victims mostly belonging to non-indigenous communities were shifted to the Shillong civil hospital for treatment, they said.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai said one Rupchand Dewan (29) however succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Dewan was a resident of Laban Jumma Compound, Hari Sabha and originally hails from Bhela Nawgoan village under Borpeta district of Assam.
The other victims have been identified as Akash Ali (21) of Laban Batti Bazaar, Ajay Kuri (39) of Mawbah, Barapathar, Rikesh Das (60) of Kench’s Trace, Satya Madak (36) of Mawprem, Deepak Kumar (17) of Barapathar, Pradeep Kuri (21) of Barapathar, Mawbah, Aman Kumar Shah (18) of Garikhana, Jadur Choudhury (50) and Shubham Nath (18) of Lower Mawprem, Bishop Falls.
He said Akash Ali (21) was assaulted by a group of people at Jaiaw, Langsning at around 11 am while Shubham Nath (18) was stabbed on his left shoulder and brought to Civil hospital with deep wound at around 3.15 pm.
Iangrai further informed that another non-tribal was also assaulted at Iew Sohra market and was taken to Sohra CHC for treatment. The person received grievous injuries on his head, where he has later referred to Shillong civil hospital for further treatment, he said.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has also reviewed the law and order situation in the state and appealed for peace following the clash at Ichamati, Shella which led to killing of a KSU activist on Friday afternoon.
Curfew has been imposed in areas under Lumdiengjri and Sadar police stations.
Based on FIR lodged by KSU, a case has been registered in Shella police station and eight persons were arrested so far. According to the senior police officer, investigation into the incident is still on.
The arrested persons have been identified as Sushan Das (46), Ranjit Baidya (30), Bajit Baidya (30), Kanal Baidya (51), Sajol Das (38), Joy Sharma (41), Indormohan Sharma (34) and Rajesh Sharma (25).
