11 candidates file nominations for First Phase of Lok Sabha Elections in Assam
Altogether 11 candidates filed nominations for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections for five constituencies in Assam on Tuesday.
For the first phase of polls, the last date for filing of nominations is March 27 (Wednesday), and scrutiny of papers will be on March 28.
Five Lok Sabha constituencies – Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kaziranga and Sonitpur – will go to polls in the first phase.
Among the prominent candidates who filed nominations on Tuesday are: Union minister and former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, AJP candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi.
Accompanied by a rally of more than 10,000 people, Union minister and BJP candidate from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat, Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nomination before the returning officer at DC office in Dibrugarh on Tuesday.
Sonowal was accompanied by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pradesh BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, UPPL president and BTR chief Pramod Boro, AGP president and state minister Atul Bora and other senior leaders of the BJP and its alliance partners.
People in large numbers were seen following Sonowal from his residence to the Govt Boys School field to mark the nomination filing of the former chief minister of the state.
“The people of Dibrugarh are determined to put the constituency in the development map of Assam and India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Sonowal said.
“Vikshit Dibrugarh, Vikshit Assam and a Vikshit India- this is the pledge everyone here is willing to take to ensure a third term for PM Modi,” Sonowal also said.
“I am fortunate that the party has allowed me to serve the people of my birthplace. I bow to every citizen of this constituency and Assam to bless me so that I can serve them in the days to come,” Sonowal added.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Sonowal will win by a large margin of votes.
“The people of Assam are determined to bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the third time and here in Dibrugarh we will set a record by ensuring Sonowal’s victory with record margin,” Sarma added.
Apart from Sonowal, the BJP candidate for Lakhimpur Pradan Baruah filed his paper before the returning officer at the DC office in North Lakhimpur on Tuesday.
Congress leader and United Opposition forum candidate for Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi filed his paper before the returning officer Pulak Kumar Mahanta at Jorhat on Tuesday.
Gogoi was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Bora opposition leader Debabrata Saikia and other senior leaders of the party.
Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, deputy leader of the opposition in the assembly and Congress’ Dhubri candidate Rakibul Hussain, MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das and Sibamoni Bora and several other leaders were present during nomination filing.
The Congress candidate, clad in a white kurta with ‘gamosa’ draped around his neck, led a procession from Jorhat Stadium to the office of the returning officer to file the nomination papers.
Before filing his nomination papers, Gogoi offered prayers at places of worship of different communities. “Ahead of filing my nomination for the Jorhat Lok Sabha Parliamentary Constituency, I sought blessings at Gurdwara Ramgarhia Sabha, Dewal Namghar, Kamalaboria Namghar, Tarajan Masjid and the Borbheta Baptist Church in Jorhat. I prayed for the peace and prosperity of my state of Assam,” Gogoi posted on ‘X’.
“Filed my nomination as the candidate of @INCIndia for the Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency today. This nomination represents aspirations of the youth, women, the marginalised, the farmers and every hard-working person of Assam who is eager for change and development,” Gogoi posted on X after filing the nomination.
“My deepest gratitude to the people of Assam for the outpouring of love and support,” Gogoi posted.
Gogoi’s main contestant is BJP’s sitting MP Topon Gogoi who will file his nomination on Wednesday in the presence of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Apart from Sonowal and Gogoi, United Opposition forum candidate and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi filed his paper before the returning officer in Dibrugarh on Tuesday morning.
“Deep gratitude to the supporters of my candidature as the MP of Dibrugarh HPC. I am moved by their love and support, as I filed my nominations. I seek the blessings of the people of Dibrugarh in the struggle to reaffirm Assam’s pride & ensure her existence,” Lurin posted on X after filing the nomination.
BJP candidate Pradan Baruah filed his paper before the returning officer in North Lakhimpur on Tuesday.
Baruaah was accompanied by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, education minister Ranoj Pegu and MLA Bhuban Chandra Pegu.
Congress candidate Roselina Tirkey filed papers before the returning officer in Golaghat on Tuesday.
BJP candidate for Kaziranga constituency, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and BJP candidate for Sonitpur constituency Ranjit Dutta will file papers on Wednesday.
For Sonitpur constituency, Congress candidate PremLal Ganju became the first candidate to file nomination before the returning officer in Tezpur on March 23.
