16th nature orientation initiative for 50 students in Kaziranga
As part of Kaziranga’s outreach activities, the 16th Nature Orientation initiative, a three-day residential exposure and training programme for the forest fringe students was completed on May 11.
NOI as it is popularly known was initiated in 2007 and since then it has built capacities and strengthened the conservation awareness among the rural school students.
This year 48 students and 4 student volunteers participated in the event. Systematic planning was undertaken to reach out to the most rural or underprivileged students and letters were written to schools under each of the ranges under Eastern Assam Wildlife Division.
Five students from Bishwanath Wildlife Division, 6 wards of Mahouts and Ghasis and 4 Divyang students from Upper Assam Handicapped Centre also participated in the event.
The male-female ratio was 29:19 and the majority of students were studying in Class 10.
Wild Grass at BosagaonKaziranga is one of the oldest resorts in the vicinity of KNPTR and Manju Barua, its owner is generously permitted to use the resort premises at discounted rates for the event.
NGOs such as WWF-India, Aaranyak, Wildlife Trust of India, Kaziranga Wildlife Society and Corbett Foundation also supported with resource persons, workshop kits and financial support as feasible.
Over 15 lecture sessions were also organized on the occasion. The inaugural;l session was attended by retired IFS officer Utpal Bora, KNPTR field direator Sonali Ghosh, DFP, EAWLD Arun Vignesh, IFS and Bokakhat SDMO Ajit Kakoty.
