2 arrested, huge cache of explosives recovered in EJH

SHILLONG: The state police have arrested two persons along with huge cache of explosives in East Jaintia Hills District. 

A special operation was conducted by a joint team of ANTF, Khliehriat Police Station, Lumshnong Police Station and Ladrymbai out post during the past two days. All the commercial vehicles plying through the district from Silchar side were thoroughly checked. 

East Jaintia Hills superintendent of police Vivekanand Singh said two passengers were arrested from a night super bus bearing registration number AS-24C-2829 travelling from Karimganj towards Guwahati when it was intercepted at Khliehriat. 

During checking, 45 packets of gelatin sticks weighing 112.5 Kg, 5900 detonators packed in boxes and 133 meters detonating cord (Cordtex) were recovered from 6 bags belonging to two passengers travelling in the said bus, he said. 

A case was registered with the Khliehriat police station under The Explosive Substances Act 1908 R/W Sec 9-B of The Explosives Act, 1884 and investigation has started. 

“During preliminary interrogation, they (two passengers) revealed that they were taking the explosives to Karbi-Anglong district of Assam,” the SP said.

According to him, the particulars of the arrested persons are not being shared in the interest of investigation. 

Earlier, nineteen foreign nationals have been arrested in the district on charges of illegally entering into India from Bangladesh after crossing international border. 

Moreover, the district police have recovered multiple consignments of narcotic drugs & psychotropic substances in last few months. 

“These illegal and highly dangerous consignments were being brought to the state of Meghalaya from neighboring states. All these cases are being thoroughly investigated in order to unearth the larger designs behind such activities,” Singh said. 

Further, he said in order to create effective deterrence as well as to protect the residents from ill-effects of such illegal acts, the district police is keeping a strict vigil round the clock.
