2 HNYM members among 4 arrested for demanding Rs 10 lakh from a victim in Shillong
Two members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) were among the four persons arrested in Shillong on Wednesday for demanding Rs 10 lakh and criminally intimidating the victim’s daughter.
They have been identified as Garnett Gedian Khongwir, 30 yrs (Member of HNYM), Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh, 38 yrs (Member of HNYM), Thounaujam David Singh, 41 yrs and Narendra Kabrambam, 29 yrs, East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger said in a statement.
“The investigation of the case is in progress to ascertain the facts and circumstances,” he said.
He informed the arrest was made following a complaint lodged on August 24, at Madanrting Police Station to the effect that on August 8, an unknown male individual had contacted the complainant at around 07:00 PM demanding a sum of Rs 10 lakh.
Thereafter, the unknown person contacted the complainant on several occasions insisting that the amount be paid immediately. However, as the complainant did not comply with the demands, the unknown caller along with 2 of his accomplices criminally trespassed the house of the complainant on 20th August 2024 at around 07:00 PM, with the intent of extorting money.
As the complainant was not at home at the time, the accused persons resorted to criminally intimidating the complainant’s daughter with dire consequences, the SP said.
