2 more die of COVID-19 in Meghalaya, toll rises to 160
Two more persons have died of COVID-19 on Sunday, taking the number of fatalities to 160, even as the state also recorded the highest single-day spike of 208 fresh cases, surging the active cases to 1,388..
54-year-old Saira Tynsong of Darrang village in West Jaintia Hills district passed away at the Shillong civil hospital and Purnima Lama (45) died at Bethany hospital on Sunday, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.
Tynsong died due to COVID-19 infection with type 1 respiratory failure and Lama due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), COVID-19 pneumonia with type 2 diabetes mellitus, he.
He said the new cases include 161 in East Khasi Hills district, 14 East Jaintia Hills district, 13 Ri Bhoi district, 9 West Jaintia Hills district, 4 each in East Garo Hills district and West Garo Hills district and 3 South West Khasi Hills district.
Dr War informed as many as 62 patients have also recovered from the viral infection of which 46 are from East Khasi Hills, 6 Ri Bhoi, 5 East Jaintia Hills, 2 South West Khasi Hills, 2 West Jaintia Hills and 1 West Garo Hills.
So far, the state has detected a total of 15,994 COVID-19 cases out of which 1,3,88 are active cases, 14,446 recovered and 160 deaths.
With 1,008 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, that includes state capital Shillong is the worst affected district in the state, followed by Ri Bhoi with 131 cases, 122 in West Jaintia Hills, 48 cases East Jaintia Hills, 32 West Garo Hills, 26 in West Khasi Hills, 13 in South West Khasi Hills, 5 East Garo Hills, 1 in South Garo Hills, 1 South West Garo Hills and 1 in North Garo Hills.
On the other hand, of the 4,49,420 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 4,33,4226 were tested negative for the virus even as 251 persons are in institutional quarantine and 1,137 under home quarantine.
There are 1,10,839 entrants from outside the state.
23, 265 healthcare workers had received the first dose of Covishield vaccine and 17,253 had received the second dose, while 35,495 frontline workers got the first shot of the vaccine and 23,775 got the second dose as on April 23.
Moreover, 81,465 persons from among the general public were vaccinated with the first dose and 9,445 were inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the State.
