200 hawkers to be relocated soon: Paul
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday informed that the government will be able to relocate over 200 hawkers once construction of new structures are ready in Khyndailad area.
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said that some new constructions are happening which include opposite SBI main branch and once they are completed they will be used for rehabilitation of hawkers within this year.

“We will not give you a definite day but it is happening. The names have already been finalised and we have indicated a space of about 200 hawkers,” he stated.
Lyngdoh said that the hawkers had representation in the town vending committee so things are going on smoothly and “we should be able to relocate them once the new structures are ready”.
Asked, the minister said one will also appreciate the fact that today even the Meghalaya High Court has stepped in by also directing the state government to expedite the process of relocating hawkers, who are creating alot of inconvenience to other road users.
“We are aware of the situation, we are ceased of the matter which is why the relocation will happen immediately once the structures are ready.”
On government being seen as anti-people while trying to resolve the issue, Lyngdoh however said, “As government whether we do it or we don’t do it, we always get the short end of the stick but we will do what has been mandated to us to do. We will perform our duties accordingly and we will ensure that all road users including transporters and pedestrians , they also have equal rights to the use of those roads.”
