The program will be graced by Dr HC Lyndem, Director Health Services (MCH and FW), Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya and Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS.
The theme of the event this year is “Access for All: Partnership, Policy & Progress. Engaging your government, integrating inherited bleeding disorders into national policy”.
The problem and challenges faced by hemophilia patients of Meghalaya will be highlighted by Dr Lutika Nepram, President Hemophilia Society Shillong Chapter.
A talk on “Oral health in hemophilia patients” will be delivered by Prof (Dr) S. Vijay Singh, HOD, Department of Dentistry, NEIGRIHMS and a training on self-infusion of factors will also be conducted.
Hemophilia is a mostly inherited genetic disorder that impairs the body’s ability to make blood clots, a process needed to stop bleeding. This results in people bleeding longer after an injury, easy bruising, and an increased risk of bleeding inside joints, brain etc.
They require lifelong infusion of factors to prevent them from bleeding which are expensive and beyond the reach of many.
There are 21 patients in Meghalaya who are diagnosed with Hemophilia out of which twenty are Hemophilia A and one with Hemophilia B.
There is likelihood of the presence of many more undiagnosed patients in the state and thus awareness in the society about this disease needs to be increased.
