24.20 lakh affected in Assam floods, CM visits floot-hit Dibrugarh
As the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries surged overnight due to heavy rainfall, the flood situation in Assam turned from bad to worse, an official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said here on Friday.
52 people died so far till Thursday. One minor boy died in Guwahati and the mother-son was killed in a landslide at 8th mile, Khanapara in the city in the last 24 hours.
24,20,722 people from 3,518 villages under 112 revenue circles of 30 districts are affected in the second wave, the ASDMA said.
30 districts are affected- Cachar, Kamrup, Hailakandi, Hojai, Dhubri, Nagaon, Morigaon, Goalpara, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Karimganj, South Salmara, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Barpeta, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Chirang, Majuli, Biswanath, Darrang, Karbi Anglong West and Kamrup (M).
The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Goalpara, Guwahati and Dhubri, Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang)), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia-Bharali at Nt Road Crossing, Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, Barak at Fulertal and AP Ghat, Katakhal at Matizuri and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level at Karimganj.
Dhubri is the worst affected with 7,75,721 population followed by Cachar with 1,75,231 population and Morigaon with 1,46,045 population affected by the deluge.
More than 3,963 people have been affected by urban floods in Kamrup, Kamrup metro and Dibrugarh districts.
7 villages have been affected by landslides in Kamrup Metro and Dima Hasai districts.
Two persons- mother and son were killed in a landslide at 8th Mile area of Khanapara in Guwahati on Friday morning.
47,103 people have taken shelter at 273 relief camps and 4,18,614 non-camp inmates have received food and other relief materials from 339 relief distribution centres across the state.
84 domestic animals were washed away by the flood water while 15,28,226 domestic animals were affected by the floods.
Rescue operations have been conducted by SDRF, NDRF and state police personnel and 379 people have been evacuated from various parts of the state in the last 24 hours. 142 boats have been put into service for rescue operations.
Th authorities distributed 49774.33 quintals of rice, 9428.23 quintals of dal, 2481.73 quintals of salt and 52957.17 litres of mustard oil among the affected people.
The floods aldo damagted dwelling houses, roads, bridges and embankments in various places causing hardship to the people.
60 per cent area of Kaziranga National Park and 40 per cent area of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are still under floodwater. 33 wild animals died die to drowning while 94 animals were rescued by a forest team in Kaziranga National Park.
In its weekly forecast, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday visited various flood-affected areas of Dibrugarh district and took stock of the situation.
Sarma waded through the submerged GS Road and Mahalaya Road in Dibrugarh town and interacted with the flood-hit people.
Sarma assured the people to take remedial measures once the flood water recedes. Meanwhile Government would clear the drains to ensure free flow of water, he said.
The Chief Minister also inspected the flood-induced breach of the ring bund at Khowang and took stock of the ground situation. He talked to the affected people and assured them of adequate steps. He asked the concerned authorities to build the ring bund and fortify the main embankment.
