3 CRPF injured in mob attack in Nongmynsong OP
At least three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured after they were attacked by an irate mob in Nongmynsong police outpost on Tuesday night.
The attack was reported while the police and CRPF personnel tried to save one of the two persons who were in an inebriated condition and taken to the Thana, from being assaulted by the crowd.
The incident took place at around 11 pm on Tuesday after there was an allegation of an assault by some non-tribals at Nongmynsong.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the situation is under control due to the joint initiatives taken by the police, dorbar shnong and residents.
“Police are investigating the matter and will do what is necessary against whoever may be involved in the incident,” he said.
On the other hand, Rymbui said that the incident was a result of false information being spread by rumour mongers to create unnecessary tension.
“Therefore, police should act swiftly so that rumor mongers cannot spread false information or twist the incident,” he said while requesting the public to come forward and share information against those involved to ensure they are brought to book.
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed that two persons were found in the area in an inebriated condition and taken to the thana for medical examination.
He said later, a crowd gathered at Nongmynsong outpost and started assaulting one of the two persons picked up and abused the police personnel and CRPF personnel on duty at the outpost.
The crowd also pelted stones thereby damaging two police vehicles, 3 private four wheeler vehicles and 3 wheelers.
“Three CRPF personnel have sustained injuries on their person,” Nongtnger said while urging the general public not to spread false rumours about the incident.
The SP further informed that a case has been registered at Rynjah police station under the relevant sections of the IPC read with section 51 of Disaster Management Act and section 3 of the Epidemic Act 1897 and section 3 PDPP Act, 1984.
“Investigation is on to ascertain more facts into the case and enquiry is on to ascertain the veracity of the allegation of assault which sparked the issue,” he said.
Meanwhile, a Community Liaison Group meeting was held today at Nongmynsong Outpost between the various community stakeholders where they have undertaken to all work towards peace and harmony in the area.
