3 died in Nongspung-Laitlarem landslide, death toll due to rain-related incidents rises to 16 in Meghalaya
At least three siblings of a family have died in a landslide that occurred in Nongspung Laitlarem village under Mawphlang Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Block in East Khasi Hills District.
The incident took place on Thursday morning, officials said.
The siblings have been identified as Wallambiang Kharmyndai (9), Banlumlang Kharmyndai (6) and Ribalin Kharmyndai (4), they said.
3 houses were also affected due to landslide in Ri Bhoi district on Wednesday while another 3 houses were also damaged by landslide at Gambegre block in West Garo Hills District on Tuesday.
The death toll due to rain-related incidents has gone up to 16 while 8 were injured from April 1 till date, officials said.
So far, over 5.43 lakh people in 590 villages have been affected while 3,904 houses were damaged (fully – 249, partially – 3384 and severely – 74) during the past three months.
The state has also witnessed infrastructure damage on public roads, shops, schools and anganwadi centres.
Meanwhile, a portion of the national highway at Lumshnong village in East Jaintia Hills also caved in on Thursday morning. A Truck and another vehicle were affected during the incident.
