38 candidates file nomination for 2nd phase of LS poll in Assam
A total of 38 candidates have filed nominations for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in five Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam slated on April 26.
Till Thursday, 65 candidates have filed 118 nomination papers. Thursday was the last day of filing nominations.
According to the poll schedule, April 5 will be the date of scrutiny of nomination papers and April 8 will be the last date of withdrawal of nomination. The voting will be conducted on April 26.
Of 38 candidates, 5 candidates filed nomination for Darrang-Udalguri constituency, five in Diphu, 20 in Karimganj, 2 in Silchar and 2 candidates filed nomination in Nagaon constituency.
In the second phase, the voting will be conducted in Nagaon, Darrang-Udalguri, Silchar, Karimganj and Diphu Lok Sabha seats.
In Nagaon, BJP candidate Suresh Bora, and Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi filed nominations for Nagaon parliamentary constituency before the returning officer of Nagaon, Narendra Kr Shah on Thursday.
Suresh Bora was accompanied by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, minister Pijjush Hazarika, BJP MLAs Rupak Sarma and Jitu Goswami during the filing of the nomination.
Sarma addressed a huge rally at Nagaon Dawson HS School playground where he said the environment in Nagaon has been changed and the wind flows in favour of BJP candidate Suresh Bora in the constituency this time. “The huge crowds in the playground have proved it today that we will win,” Sarma said.
Taking a dig at the opposition Congress, Sarma said that Congress turned into an old obsolete currency note with which nothing could be purchased in the market and currently people could realise that.
Following the event, Sarma along with Suresh Bora, Pijjush Hazarika, Rupak Sarma, Jitu Goswami and other senior leaders staged a huge roadshow from Dawson school playground to the office of the district commissioner of Nagaon.
Several thousand party workers as well as its supporters from various assembly segments under Nagaon parliamentary constituency took part in the roadshow.
Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi also came to the office of the district commissioner of Nagaon with a huge rally and filed his nomination papers to the returning officer.
Bordoloi was accompanied by former Congress minister Rakibul Hussain, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, and Congress MLA Nurul Huda during the submission of nomination papers.
Thousands of people from various assembly constituencies under Nagaon, participated in the Congress rally and reverberated the air of the small town with various slogans.
Former minister Rakibul Hussain was intercepted by security personnel at the entry gate for a while for reason unknown for which a war of arguments took place between security officials and Hussain. Later, intervention of Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi the matter was settled and Hussain was allowed to get in.
Five candidates have filed their nomination for Darrang Udaalguri constituency before the returning officer of Udaalguri on Thursday.
They are Biren Basak (BGP), Daniel Mardi (Ind), Aroon Barooa (Bharatheeya Jawan Kishan party), Dilip Kumar Saikia (BJP) and Abdul Hamed (Rashtriya Ulema Council).
With this, the total number of candidates has gone up to 11 in this constituency. On Wednesday, six candidates filed their papers: Lalit Pegu (VPI), Jitendra Chaliha (SUCI-C), Durga Das Boro (BPF), Swarna Devi (GSP), Abul Kasem (RPI-A) and Madhav Rajbongshi (INC).
Congress candidate Hafiz Rashid Choudhury along with 19 other candidates filed their papers for Karimganj constituency on Thursday. With this, a total of 25 candidates have filed their papers for the constituency.
Of them 19 candidates are independent. BJP candidate Kripa Nath Mollah filed his paper on Wednesday.
