5 UHM activists injured in mob attack in Assam Meghalaya border
Five members of the United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) were injured after they were attacked by a mob from Assam at a village along the interstate border in the West Jaintia Hills district on Friday.
The incident took place at Saba village when the delegation of the UHM was conducting an inspection of the site where the Assam government had allegedly constructed a police outpost.
UHM organizing secretary Kharless Nongbri was among the injured who were shifted to Barato PHC for medical treatment. The other members were identified as Lakhon Shylla, Precious Dkhar, Mida Malang and Simple Dkhar.
Nongbri said the delegation was attacked by a mob belonging to the Karbi community and armed with sharp weapons.
He alleged that the Assam police did not take any action despite seeing that the mob had chased them with the intention to harm.
“We have not gone there to create law and order but to inspect the construction site,” he said while condemning the inaction of the Assam police.
“We are not here to create law and order but we just want to verify the construction sites, and we also condemned the inaction of the Assam police who stood as spectators when the mobs started to attack us” said Nongbri.
Nongbri also informed that the delegations prior to their visit to the construction sites have informed the police station of Nartiang but even then they were attacked by miscreants belonging to the Karbi community.
