56 Indian students safely return from Bangladesh via Karimganj
Eight more Indian students who have been stranded in Bangladesh due to ongoing violence, have returned to India through Sutarkandi land port in Assam’s Karimganj district on Sunday.
With this, the number of students returned to the country through Sutarkandi land port has increased to 56 in the last four days.
Karimganj district superintendent of police Partha Pratim Das confirmed the return of eight students through Sutarkandi land port on Sunday.
As the civil unrest in Bangladesh continues, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka facilitates safe travel for Indian students to crossing points along the India-Bangladesh international border.
“We have deputed a magistrate to observe the situation there and to coordinate with the Indian students who are coming from Bangladesh. Till now 56 students have come. We are expecting more students may come and are watching to coordinate,” Das said.
The High Commission is in regular contact with students still in various universities across Bangladesh. The tense situation prevailed in Bangladesh due to quota reserves of up to 30 per cent of government jobs for family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Independence against Pakistan.
The district administration, BSF, Assam Police and immigration check post authority are receiving the Indian student from Sutarkandi land port.
However, a senior official of the Border Security Force (BSF) said: “The students entered voluntarily, not evacuated. From July 18 to 21, 56 Indian students entered India through ICP Sutarkandi/ Karimganj, Assam.”
