7 women among 117 candidates in fray for JHADC polls
The nomination papers of 117 candidates including seven women vying for the 29 seats of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) were found to be in order during the scrutiny exercises held on Monday.
The scrutiny for 74 candidates who are contesting from the 19 constituencies under West Jaintia Hills District was held in the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Jowai and in the office of SDO (Civil) Amlarem.
While the nomination papers for 43 candidates contesting from ten constituencies under East Jaintia Hills District were carried out in the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Khliehriat.
There are seven women candidates: Banikas Laban, Congress Candidate from Barato Mukroh Constituency, Darapbiang Mulieh VPP Candidate from Mynsngat Khanduli Constituency, Empress Pala, Congress Candidate from Saipung Narwan Constituency, Violet Lyngdoh Independent Candidate from Rymbai-Khliehriat Constituency, Lastborn Soul Sympli, VPP candidate from Sutnga-Nongkhlieh constituency, Deivipaya Tongper, VPP candidate from Narpuh Constituency and Laiawanlamjinghun Khyriem, VPP candidate from Mynso Nongjngi Constituency.
All the three locations viz DC’s office Jowai, SDO (Civil)’s Amlarem and DC’s Office, Khliehriat under Jaintia Hills region where the scrutiny was conducted witnessed a huge gathering of people both young and old, men, women and youths cheering for candidates and political parties of their own choice.
Out of the 29 constituencies, the NPP fielded 28 candidates while the VPP put up candidates from all 29 constituencies while the UDP fielded 17 candidates and the Congress party with 19 candidates. The BJP and the HSPDP fielded 5 candidates and 2 candidates respectively while there are 17 independent candidates in the fray.
The last day for withdrawal of nomination papers is on Tuesday while the last day of campaigning is February 19th at 4pm and the polling will be held on February 21 and the counting of votes on February 24.
