67 students returned from Bangladesh to Meghalaya following quota protests
Following the nationwide protests in Bangladesh and reported clashes between students and government forces, the Meghalaya government on Thursday said it is in constant touch with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Indian High Commission, Land Port Authority, Dawki and Exporters Association and has taken up all possible measures for the safety of these students.
So far 202 are from India, of which 198 are students (67 from Meghalaya and 131 other states), 101 from Nepal and 7 from Bhutan have entered through Dawki since the clases, a government official said.
The students that came in the last bus left ICP Dawki at around 6.45 pm, he said while adding that the situation is under control and under close watch.
The Meghalaya government has also activated the helpline number 1800-345-3644 for citizens of Meghalaya who may require assistance due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
Citizens of the state can call the helpline number 1800-345-3644 of DIPR for any assistance they may need related to the above-mentioned incident.
In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, and to assist the citizens of the State, the Government of Meghalaya has deputed Hiwot Rymbai, MPS., Additional SP, Jowai (+91 96157 16153) as a Nodal Officer at the border along with Executive Officer, Land Port Authority Dawki, Mr. Thomas (+91 84150 60802 ) as Asst. Nodal Officer.
An advisory was also issued requesting Indian community members and Indian students residing in Bangladesh to avoid local travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises. In case of any urgency or need for assistance, they are requested to reach out to the High Commission and Assistant High Commission.
