70 DySPs from Assam & Mizoram complete intensive NEPA training

A total of 70 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySP) – 62 from Assam and 8 from Mizoram graduated from the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) during a spectacular Dikshant Parade held on March 28. The ceremony was reviewed by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also commissioned the officers into active service. NEPA Director Danesh Rana, IPS, administered the oath to the graduating officers.
DySP Probationer Porikhit Gogoi of the Assam Police Service commanded the parade. The event witnessed an impressive turnout, including top officials from Assam and Meghalaya, special invitees, NEPA staff, and proud family members of the graduating officers. The outstanding performance of the trainees on parade stood as a testament to their discipline and commitment.
The batch began their training on April 2, 2024. The nearly year-long training program followed a meticulously structured and continuously updated curriculum designed to meet the dynamic needs of modern policing. The indoor syllabus was broadly categorized into Police Science, Legal Studies, and Social Science, covering key areas like national security, trust deficit in policing, gender-based crimes, crisis management, registration of documents, civil suits, externment procedures, and cross-border crime investigation.
Outdoor training focused on drill, physical efficiency, weapons handling, and field exercises such as cordon and search, ambush and counter-ambush, raids, and seizures. The physical component also included horse riding, driving, and police tactics. These were complemented by scenario-based exercises to develop real-time decision-making and operational readiness.
NEPA further enhanced training quality by inviting guest lectures from domain experts, academicians, and senior serving and retired officers from across the country. NEPA also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with reputed institutions including the National Forensic Science University (NFSU), Sardar Patel University of Police, Security & Criminal Justice (SPUPSCJ), Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), and others to facilitate academic and practical enrichment.
As part of their experiential learning, the trainees participated in the Bharat Darshan Study Tour, gaining first-hand insight into policing systems across Indian states while exploring the country’s rich cultural heritage.
In addition to academics, NEPA laid emphasis on holistic development. The trainees engaged in diverse extracurricular and club activities designed to cultivate leadership, communication skills, and team spirit. These included participation in the Extempore and Debate Club, Quiz Club, Sports Club, Social Service Club, Literary Club, IT Club, and Cultural Club. Events like annual athletic meets, quiz competitions, cultural programs, and a creative publication titled “Confluence” – featuring trainee articles, poems, and photographs formed part of the calendar.
Trainees also conducted tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns (Swachhta Abhiyaan), and blood donation camps in and around the NEPA campus. All activities were guided by designated officers in charge to instil accountability and service orientation.
Upon completion of the Basic Training, all officers were also awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Police Administration and Investigation by SPUPSCJ, Jodhpur, in recognition of their academic accomplishments during the course.
NEPA’s commitment to excellence has earned it national recognition, including the Union Home Minister’s Trophy for Best Training Institute at the national level in 2015- 16 and 2021-22. In 2023, it was accredited as an “UTKRISHT” organization by CBC & NABET, New Delhi.
In his address, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma congratulated the young officers for their successful completion of training and lauded NEPA’s leadership for delivering a world-class program. He personally handed out medals and trophies to outstanding performers, marking a proud day for the graduating batch and the Academy alike.
