9 EWS certificates issued so far

Nine economically weaker section (EWS) certificates have been issued so far, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Thursday.

Replying to a query raised by East Shillong legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Assembly, Sangma said the District Magistrate issues EWS certificates as per government office memorandum dated January 31, 2019 of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Department of Personnel & Training.

The benefits of EWS certificates apply to reservation in central government posts and services and admission in education institutions, he said.

When asked, the Chief Minister said there are few reasons why only 9 certificates have been issued and one of them is that these EWS certificates are meant for individuals, who are not covered under the schemes of reservation for SC/ST.

He said the process of coming up with an office memorandum on how to apply for the EWS certificates is on. Once it is prepared and the office memorandum is ready, the matter will be taken up in the cabinet, he added.
