AASU-ABVP clash: ABVP banned at Gauhati University
Five days after a clash between the activists of Gauhati University Post Graduate Students Union (GUPGSU) and Assam unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Gauhati University campus in Jalukbari over the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), the GUPGSU and University Law College Students Union (ULCSU) on Saturday banned all activities of ABVP in the university campus.
Addressing a press conference at Jalukbari on Saturday, GUPGSU president Jintu Das and ULCSU president Nasibur Rahman said: “ABVP itself undertook unpleasant and unconstitutional activities to disrupt the democratic protests of the students on March 18 and now they are misinterpreting the incident to cover up their faults.”
“The ABVP which is afraid of the unity of the university students, has been misinterpreting the protest as being carried out by two organizations to divide the united voice of the student community. But the protest was not of any party, it was of the students of Gauhati University, led by the PGSU and the USCSU, in the interest of the Assamese people regardless of party or organization,” they said.
“We hereby ban the activities of ABVP inside the university campus for their attempt to disrupt peace in the university by lodging an FIR against the registrar and secretary of university classes on false charges. ABVP supports CAA against the interests of the people of Assam. They are also trying to disrupt peace inside the university campus by hiring goons from outside,” they further said.
Both the student organizations also asserted that they would continue their agitation against the government till the controversial CAA is repealed in the Parliament.
“CAA is considered a threat to the existence of indigenous people of the state. We will continue our protests with the university students until the CA is repealed,” they added.
On March 18, students of Gauhati University were staging a protest against the CAA, in while the leaders of ABVP intervened questioning their legal authority to stage such a protest inside the university campus.
The situation was aggravated when some ABVP activists tore down some banners and anti-CAA posters, which were pasted at the main gate of the GU as part of the sit-in demonstration programme.
Eight students of the varsity were injured in the clash between two groups. Finally, police rushed to the spot to control the situation.
