ACHIK threatens to protest against act of betrayal by Garo MLAs for rejecting winter capital resolution

The A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) on Friday strongly condemned the MLAs from Garo Hills for allegedly betraying the mandate of the people by rejecting a resolution for having a winter capital in Tura.
This came a day after the Assembly witnessed a resolution being withdrawn by opposition leader Mukul Sangma on the assurance of the state government through the chief minister Conrad K Sangma to constitute a committee to examine the proposal for having a winter capital in Tura.
Almost all the MLAs from Garo Hills have supported the idea of a winter capital in Tura but had to reject the resolution due to a technical issue that in the State Assembly has never witnessed passing of a resolution moved by opposition.
In a statement, the ACHIK however said, “This is not just a political failure but a direct attack on the legitimate aspirations and rights of the people of Garo Hills.”
“The demand for a Winter Capital in Tura is not an unreasonable or new demand but a rightful call for administrative decentralization and equitable governance in Meghalaya. Shillong, as the sole capital, has led to severe developmental neglect of Garo Hills, resulting in poor infrastructure, lack of direct policy implementation, and an unfair concentration of government offices and facilities in one region,” it said.
Stating that it refuses to let the betrayal go unnoticed, the ACHIK announced its decision to hold public representative accountable by exposing their names and demand explanation.
“We will organize protests, awareness campaigns, and democratic demonstrations to ensure the demand for a Winter Capital in Tura remains at the forefront. We will petition the Governor, the President of India, and other constitutional bodies to intervene and ensure decentralization of governance in Meghalaya,” it stated.
