AHAM meets GHADC chief over GCL issue
A delegation of the Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) led by its Vice President Georgeprince Cheran on Monday met Chief Executive Member, Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and discussed about the Garo Customary Law (GCL) and other issues.
Cheran Vice President of AHAM said that the codified GCL is yet to become an Act and has expressed discontent over the issue and the inactivity of the matter.
However, the GHADC CEM has reassured the AHAM that the file and the letter has already been forwarded to the Political Department for further necessary action.
Cheran said that the issue would be taken up with the state government very soon and will lead to aggressive agitations if the government denies the rights of the Achik nation.
“ GCL is the right of the Achiks and the legislation deriving from the culture and practices of our people should prevail in commission and omission of justice in GHADC,” he said.
He added, “Today, the administration of justice in GHADC is undertaken under oaths and ordeals which is very subjective in nature.”
“GHADC need to play its role of legislative, executive and judiciary for Garo people.”
He informed that while having a discussion with CEM, the GHADC must be proactive to the current need of the day.
He informed that CEM has also reiterated that the Financial and Service Rule has also been submitted to the state government but waiting for the approval till date.
AHAM also demanded a separate electoral roll for GHADC which has been a long pending demands of the local NGOs and the Garo people.
