AIUDF seeks action against 30 organisations for 7-day ultimatum issued to Miya Muslims in Upper Assam
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Monday sought against the leaders of 30 organisations who issued a seven-day deadline for Miya Muslims to leave Upper Assam.
A delegation from the AIUDF, led by general secretary (administration) Hafiz Basir Aahmed Kasimi, met with Assam Governor Lakshman Acharya at the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati and urged him to maintain peace and tranquillity among all sections of the people in the state.
In a memorandum to the Governor, the AIUDF said the Dhing gang rape incident, in which a 14-year-old teenage girl was gang raped by three persons, has instilled fear and anxiety among a section of the Muslim Community in upper Assam districts.
The memorandum stated that some unknown organizations and fundamentalist groups publicly issued threats against a section of the Muslim community demanding that they should leave upper Assam immediately or face dire consequences. Such statements are not only alarming but also create a serious threat to communal harmony and the safety of the community in the region.
“The recent incident in Sivasagar against the Hindi-speaking people has deepened the magnitude of the statement. This act of intimidation has created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among those Muslim Community, who now fear for their lives and livelihood,” they said.
The AIUDF said the threat is a direct violation of their fundamental rights as citizens of India, including the right to live with dignity, freedom and security. Under Article 14, 19, 20, 21 and 22 of the constitution of India and also violation of Universal Declaration of Human Rights under Article 3,” the memorandum also stated.
“Assam has a long history of communal harmony, where people of different religions, ethnicities and backgrounds have been living together in peace and harmony. Such divisive and hateful statements have the potential to disrupt this agelong harmony and could lead to violence and unrest,” they also said.
The AIUDF demanded immediate action against such reactionary force and said: “We urge the state government to take strict legal action against the disturbing elements for their inflammatory statements. This includes initiating legal proceedings under the relevant section of the law.”
The delegation further demanded the protection of the innocent people and said the state government should deploy adequate security forces in the affected areas of Upper Assam to ensure the safety and security of the innocent people. The presence of law enforcement will help prevent and potential violence and reassure the community.
The party also urged the state government issues a public statement condemning such hate speech and reassure all Communities in Assam that their safety and rights will be protected,” the memorandum further said.
