AJP to work in unison with Sikkim-based CAPS, plan common platform for Northeast regional parties
The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), a regional political party based in Assam, and the Citizen Action Party of Sikkim (CAPS) have announced their collaboration to work in unison for the greater interest of the indigenous people in the northeastern states.
In a meeting held at Hotel Gateway Grandway in Guwahati on Thursday, leaders of the two parties also decided to float a common platform for regional political parties of the Northeast.
“We have been working to form a common platform for all regional political parties in the Northeast. We have already established links with several regional parties in Meghalaya, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh Talks are also underway with regional parties in Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur If this effort is successful, a common regional political platform based in the Northeast will soon be born,” AJP president Lurinjypoti Gogoi told reporters after the meeting.
After an hour-long discussion, the two parties issued a five-point joint declaration The meeting appointed AJP general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan and Citizen Action Party Executive president Lakpa Sherpak as the coordinators between the two parties The two coordinators will also discuss the formation of the proposed unity forum with other political parties in the Northeast.
The joint declaration stated that the two parties would work together to protect and promote the social, linguistic, cultural and economic interests of the Indigenous peoples of the two states They will also work together to protect the political rights and interests of the Indigenous peoples of the two states, protection of land and forest resources, sustainable development and environmental protection, socio-economic development, preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage.
The two parties described the meeting as a historic meeting for the people-oriented welfare of Assam and Sikkim. They said in a joint declaration that this effort is a positive step towards mutual coordination, cooperation and harmony among the states of the Northeast.
AJP working president Pabindra Deka, general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan, two advisors Basanta Deka and Dr Krihnagopal Bhattacharyya, vice presidents Chandrakanta Das and Anjan Upadhaya and secretaries Bani Das, Jiaur Rahman and Chttaraanajan Basumatary and organizing secretary Ajay Tanti took part in the meeting.
From Citizen Action Party of Sikkim, chief coordinator Ganesh K Rai, working presidents Lakpa Sherpa, MB Limbu and Prashant Babu Chetri, spokespersons TR Nepal and Albert Gurung and Students’ Wing president Prakash Prajuli were present.
