All 7 MLAs of Jaintia Hills region should intervene to clear the garbage of Jowai Town
Three days’ time to clear the garbage in Iawmusiang Jowai or face total closure said the Dorbar Shnong Tympang lawmusiang, Jowai on Tuesday while appealing to all seven MLAs of Jaintia Hills region to shoulder responsibility in resolving the crisis of garbage as Iawmusiang Jowai directly or indirectly serves the business and other requirements of all the people of Jaintia Hills.
The appeal was made by the Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang in a petition submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District, the Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang highlighting the failure of the Municipal Authorities to collect the garbage from the Markets within the area of lawmusiang since 4th February last, and the dumping of garbage on the road side have provoked an unbearable stench which is now becoming a health hazard to the general public, particularly the residents of the area.
Talking to media persons after meeting the Deputy Commisisoner, newly elected Waheh Chnong Ajoy Lywait said that they have been asked to wait for outcome of the Court proceeding. He also informed that if the District Administration fail to clear the garbage they will meet again to decide for total closure of the locality.
They also said a large number of people including the students, staff of different offices and the public from all over Jaintia Hills who come to Jowai have to pass through the road at lawmusiang and were forcibly exposed to the foul smell emanating from the garbage dump on the road.
The Dorbar Shnong observed that the stopping of garbage collection from other localities in Jowai Town from February 2022 resulted in the dumping of garbage in Iawmusiang for they too are left with no alternatives.
“We have just come out of the dangerous situation arising from the Covid 19 Pandemic, although we are yet to be fully secured. We do not want that people of the Town will be part of the risk of any epidemic that may arise from the Garbage left unattended for such a long time,” the Dorbar feared.
They highlighted that they are fully aware that there are irresponsible and vested interest individuals and organisations who are trying to achieve mileage from the present situation in Jowai for their own political or personal gain.
The Dorbar Shnong urged the Deputy Commissioner to direct the Municipal Authorities to remove the garbage from lawmusiang area within 3 (three) days from the date of receipt of this petition, and pending availability of new dumping yard to use the dumping place at Mynkjai as usual as this has been used for the purpose since the last 40 (forty) years or they will compel to resort to direct action.
