Amit Shah fake video case: Cong war room coordinator Reetam Singh arrested, sent to jail custody
Assam Police on Sunday night arrested Congress war room coordinator and lawyer Reetam Singh from Rajiv Bhawan herein connection with the circulation of an edited video of Union home minister Amit Shah and abusive content on social media.
Taking to the X (formerly Twitter), Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “Assam police have arrested an individual named Sri Reetom Singh in connection with the fake video involving Honorable Home Minister Sri @AmitShah.”
Reetam was picked up by a team of Panbazar police at around 11.40 pm on Sunday.
His laptop and two mobile phones were also seized by the police team.
On Monday Reetam was produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Guwahati, who remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.
He was charged with Panbazar police station case number 93/2024.
A space engineer from London, Reetam is also a lawyer of Gauhati High Court.
Reteam allegedly posted an edited video of Amit Shah in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on April 27, in which he alleged that the BJP will remove the reservation of ST, SC and OBc once it comes to power in this election.
“BJP will end SC-ST-OBC reservation in India if it comes to power. This is pure Brahminical hegemony and death to Ambedkar’s constitution,” Singh wrote in his post.
“Just like they want to give all of India’s wealth to 1% Ambanis and Adanis. They want to give all seats and jobs to 3% Brahmins,” Singh also wrote.
Family sources claimed even as Reetama posted the video, he removed it immediately after he came to know it was fake.
Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Boraha condemned the arrest of Reetam Singh and said: “Reetam Singh was arrested for criticizing government policies. Every citizen has the right to criticize the policies of the government. By this, they tried to tame the voice of the opposition.”
“This is the sign of an unhealthy democracy. The arrest at the time of the election is not justified,” Borah added.
