Amit Shah unveils Rs 8 lakh crore development plan, inaugurates Police Academy in Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, highlighting the BJP-led government’s commitment to strengthening Assam’s security forces and driving large-scale development. Alongside Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Shah detailed plans for infrastructure, economic growth, and peace initiatives in the state.
Shah lauded the new police academy, named after the legendary Ahom warrior Lachit Barphukan, as a milestone for law enforcement. He projected that within five years, it would become India’s premier police training institute. Built with an initial investment of Rs 167 crore, the academy’s total cost will reach Rs 1,050 crore across three phases. Shah emphasized its state-of-the-art facilities, which are already training personnel from states like Goa and Manipur.
Beyond policing, Shah underscored the Modi government’s focus on long-term peace and economic transformation. He cited key peace accords—including the Assam-Bodoland Accord (2020) and agreements with ULFA, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh—as instrumental in reducing insurgency and bringing over 10,000 former militants into the mainstream.
On the economic front, Assam is set to receive Rs 8 lakh crore in infrastructure projects, including:
- Advantage Assam 2.0, securing MoUs worth Rs 5.18 lakh crore.
- Rs 3 lakh crore in new projects, such as the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor industry initiative.
- Major connectivity upgrades, including the Bharatmala Project (Rs 10,000 crore), Dhubri-Phulwari Bridge (Rs 3,000 crore), and embankment reinforcements for Majuli Island.
- Healthcare and education investments, with new medical colleges in Tamulpur, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Dhubri, along with AIIMS and railway expansions.
Shah also highlighted welfare initiatives, noting that the Modi government has provided tap water to 58 lakh households, free healthcare for 1.8 crore people, and free rice to 2.32 crore underprivileged citizens. He accused previous governments of neglecting Assam’s development and failing to maintain peace.
The Union Minister praised the state’s law enforcement progress under Himanta Biswa Sarma, citing an increase in conviction rates from 5% to 25%. He credited the academy with reshaping Assam’s policing, ensuring officers are trained under India’s new criminal laws, and prioritizing citizen protection.
Shah concluded by asserting that Assam is witnessing an era of peace, prosperity, and growth under the Modi government, with the newly inaugurated police academy serving as a foundation for a stronger, more secure future.
