Anti-CAB protests turn violent in Shillong
SHILLONG: Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) turned violent in the state capital on Thursday.
Vehicles at Khyndailad (Police Bazaar) and other parts of Shillong were set on fire.
A car parked infront of the Hannuman Box Motilal was set on fire by a group of masked miscreants, who also burnt garments of a non-tribal shop at Dreamland in Khyndailad area.
Another two cars and two-wheelers were also torched near Robert Hospital and Jaiaw Langsning. Stone pelting was also reported damaging windshield of vehicles.
The incident created panic among the public as they immediately evacuated from the area even as shops quickly down their shutter. Security forces and fire-fighters also swung into action to control the situation.
Police were also seen preventing vehicles at IGP area from moving towards Khyndailad area.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday night with 125 votes in favour of the Bill after intense debate and consideration. The Bill is now only one step away from becoming law.
