Anti-influx groups demand govt to implement MRSSA
Four NGOs on Thursday erected their own anti-influx check gate in Ri Bhoi district as a mark of protest against the state government’s apathy to address the issue by delaying the setting up of the entry point at Umling.
Activists from the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) were also seen displaying placards and banners at the check gate.
Speaking to media persons, RBYF president, B Thangkhiew said the NGOs are forced to take such action since the state government has failed to show any seriousness towards addressing the influx issue.
He said the decision taken by the state government to de-sanction the administrative approval for the construction of the Umling entry point has further created more apprehension about its commitment.
Condemning the delay to set up the entry-exit points across the state, Thangkhiew said, “We reiterate our demand for immediate implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act in letter and spirit.”
On the government’s assurance to complete the Umling entry point by December 15, the RBYF leader warned that the NGOs will have no other option but to intensify their agitation if the government fails to keep its promises.
