Appointment of new MSWC chairperson soon: Govt
The state government will soon take a call on the appointment of a new chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW).
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that few names have been shortlisted for the appointment of the new MSCW chairperson.
He however refused to disclose the names recommended by a panel.
According to him, the post has been lying vacant after the retirement of former MSCW chairperson Theilin Phanbuh in November last year.
Asked, the minister informed that the state government will take a decision on the matter very soon.
“We have decided to have a meeting on this issue in the third week of this month,” Shylla said.
He however informed that the meeting will be held after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma comes back from his campaigning for the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
Asked, the minister has ruled out the possibility of re-appointing the former chairperson.
“If a chairperson has continued for two consecutive terms, she cannot be re-appointed to the post that is one of the criteria and we are following that,” he said.
Meanwhile, the minister has also expressed concern over the rise in crimes against women and children in the state.
“I condemned this kind of violence against our women and children,” he said. Shylla said that perpetrators of such crimes should be punished as per law of the land.
