Arunachal Dy CM inaugurates Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial honouring Adi warriors

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Wednesday inaugurated the 1894 Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial at Adi Pasi in Upper Siang district. This historic monument stands as a tribute to the valour and tactical brilliance of the Adi warriors of Pasi Village, who, during the 3rd Anglo-Abor War (1893-94), successfully repelled a British punitive expedition using guerrilla warfare and stone barricades, preserving their homeland and sovereignty.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy CM Mein described the occasion as both historic and deeply emotional, marking a proud moment to remember the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect their land from colonial rule. He emphasized that the memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of their sacrifices, ensuring their involvement in the history of India’s freedom movement is never forgotten.
Mein commended the local community for funding and constructing the memorial through their own contributions, calling it an inspiration for other communities to honor their forefathers. He noted that such gestures keep the spirit of Arunachal’s indigenous heritage alive and reaffirm the state’s role in India’s freedom struggle.
Highlighting the inseparable bond between Arunachal’s people and their land, Mein stressed the importance of sustainable development that does not compromise the region’s ecological balance. He urged citizens to take pride in their traditional knowledge, languages, and customs, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
“Our festivals, rituals, and traditions are more than just celebrations; they define who we are. Just as our ancestors defended their homeland with unwavering courage, we must safeguard our cultural identity and natural resources with the same dedication. True progress is measured not just by infrastructure and industry, but by how well we preserve our forests, rivers, and biodiversity,” Mein stated.
Mein also spoke about the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project over the Siang River and the potential threat posed by China’s proposed 60,000 MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River. He urged the people of Arunachal Pradesh to introspect and reconsider the positive impacts of the project, encouraging open discussions with the government on its significance.
The inauguration was attended by several distinguished dignitaries, including Minister for PR, RD, Transport & Cooperation, Ojing Tasing; President of Adi Baane Kebang, Tadum Libang; Secretary General of ABK, Vijay Taram; ZPC, DC and SP of Upper Siang, MLA Geku-Mariyang AC, Oni Panyang and MLA Dambuk, Puinnyo Apum.
Mein expressed his gratitude to local leaders and the people of Adi Pasi for their commitment to preserving Arunachal Pradesh’s rich history and ecological balance. He reiterated that initiatives like this memorial bridge the past and future, ensuring that tradition and progress move forward together.
The Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial is not just a tribute to history but a guiding light for generations to come, reinforcing cultural pride, environmental stewardship, and unity in Arunachal Pradesh.
