Former Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai on Saturday recalled that he had sent a proposal for erection of a life-size statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem at Dhaka.
“I don’t know but during my time as minister and based on the records, we had proposed for construction of a full size statue but since I am no longer a minister, I am not aware about it,” he told reporters.
He was responding to a question on the unveiling of only a bust of the freedom fighter at Dhaka, despite the government’s announcement for erection of a life-size statue of U Tirot Sing.
Shullai also informed that he did receive an invitation for accompanying the state delegation to Dhaka but at the last moment adding that he could not join the government’s delegation in view of the ongoing budget session of the State Assembly
Expressing happiness that the bust of the freedom fighter has been finally unveiled in Dhaka, Shullai said that he had initiated the proposal for erection of the statue at Dhaka during his tenure as arts and culture minister.
“At the end of the day it does not matter as we have unveiled the bust and this is the happiest moment for the Khasi and Garo community of Meghalaya, the family members of U Tirot Sing, the Hima Nongkhlaw and all the NGOs and the people at large”.
