ASA expresses solidarity with agitating students, condemns NEHU VC
The Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) on Saturday expressed its solidarity with the protesting students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who are sitting on an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the removal of the VC and other officials.
In a statement, the ASA said, “We condemn the Vice Chancellor for his anti-tribal policies and actions, which have cost the university’s infrastructure and made a mockery of social justice. Teachers and students allege that very few locals and tribals were recruited as teaching and non-teaching staff on campus during the current VC’s tenure. Instead ,the VC has been adamant about recruiting officials with questionable or no academic credentials. This is an assault on the social fabric of the university that should reflect regional aspirations and demands.”
Reiterating the demands of NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit to remove the VC, Registrar, and Deputy Registrar, the ASA said, “We urge the government to scrutinise the recruitment that took place during the tenure of the current VC. We also demand the immediate appointment of a Pro-VC for the Tura campus to fast-track the various infrastructural grievances raised by the students of NEHU.”
