ASPF demands strict security, gambling ban at Chenga Benga Mela after last year’s tragedy

The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) Garobadha Regional Unit has called for heightened security and a strict prohibition on gambling at the upcoming Chenga Benga Mela in South West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The group formally urged the district’s superintendent of police to ensure a safe and peaceful festival.
In a letter to the SP, ASPF Garobadha Regional Unit president Sanjhu T. Sangma and secretary Sengte Marak voiced strong opposition to gambling activities at the event. “It has come to our notice that there are inquiries regarding permission for gambling during the festival. We strongly oppose any such activities as they may lead to unlawful behaviour and disrupt the peaceful nature of the festival,” the letter stated.
The demand for stricter security comes in light of a harrowing incident at last year’s Chenga Benga Mela, where two minor girls were gang-raped in Gandhipara village. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has raised concerns over the possible involvement of Rohingya infiltrators, making security a top priority this year.
The ASPF urged law enforcement for complete the ban on gambling, including betting, lotteries, and any money-related games, deployment of adequate police personnel across the festival area, installation of CCTV cameras and regular patrol to deter criminal activities and background checks to ensure all individuals associated with the event are properly vetted.
The ASPF also urged for setting up dedicated help desks, emergency response teams, and awareness campaigns to prevent crimes against vulnerable attendees.
The ASPF emphasized that prompt action from the authorities would help uphold the cultural integrity of the festival while ensuring law and order. “We urge your esteemed office to prevent any illegal activities, especially gambling, and to ensure the safety of all attendees,” the letter concluded.
