ASPF ramps up campaign for winter capital in Tura, urges government action

The A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) intensified its movement for a Winter Capital in Tura, holding its third public meeting in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya, on Saturday.
The gathering, part of an ongoing public awareness campaign, aimed to mobilize support and pressure the government to fulfil the long-standing demand for a Winter Capital in Tura. The event saw the participation of community leaders, Nokmas, NGO representatives, social activists, and senior citizens, all united in advocating for this decades-old cause.
Social activist Greneth Sangma strongly asserted that a Winter Capital in Tura is not a privilege, but a right.
“The Meghalaya government has ignored this rightful demand for over fifty years, despite the promises made by our state’s founders. It is time for action,” he declared.
ASPF Secretary and advocate, Bernita Marak acknowledged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for forming a committee to examine the proposal and praised Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma for introducing a historic resolution in the Assembly supporting the initiative.
“This is a defining moment for the Garo people. We must remain united and committed until this aspiration becomes a reality,” Marak said.
Acting chairman of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), Balkarin Ch Marak commended the participants for their active engagement and reaffirmed that the demand for a Winter Capital is deeply rooted in the region’s history.
“Our forefathers envisioned this, and we must see it through. The fight does not end here—our collective voice must grow stronger until the government acts,” he emphasized.
The meeting concluded with a renewed call for unity and persistence, as ASPF vowed to continue its campaign until the establishment of a Winter Capital in Tura became a reality.
