Assam: 81.49 lakh voters to decide fate of 47 candidates in 4 LS seats in 3rd phase voting
81,49,091 voters will decide the fate of 47 candidates in four Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam where the third phase of elections will be conducted along with 94 Lok Sabha constituencies in 12 states across the country on Tuesday.
Poll parties have been dispatched from all district headquarters and are reaching to their respective polling stations by Monday evening. The voting will be conducted from 7 am on Tuesday.
A total of 47 candidates are contesting from four seats – Guwahati, Dhubri, Barpeta and Kokrajhar in the third phase.
Of 47 candidates, there is one sitting MP and four MLAs. 14 are contesting from Barpeta, 13 from Dhubri, 12 candidates in Kokrajhar and 8 candidates are contesting in Guwahati.
NDA candidate Bijuli Kalita Medi is contesting from the Guwahati seat against Congress candidate Mira Borthalkur Goswami.
Sitting MP and AIUDF supremo Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal is seeking reelection from Dhubri against Congress candidate and former minister Rakibul Hussain and AGP candidate Zabed Islam.
Eight-time MLA and former minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury are contesting as NDA candidate from Barpeta against CPI-M candidate Manoranjan Talukdar and Congress candidate Deep BayanUPPL candidate and sitting MLS Jayants Basumatary is contesting from Kokrajhar against BPF candidate Kampa Borgoyari and Congress candidate Garjan Mashahary.
“All arrangements have been completed. 45 thousand poll personnel, including presiding officers, have been dispatched to 9,516 polling stations across the four constituencies. 143 additional companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed for free and fair voting in the third phase,’ Assam chief electoral officer (CEO) Anurag Goel told reporters here on Monday.
Of 9.516 polling booths, 300 are sensitive, Goel said adding that 326 are women-run polling stations and 84 are model polling stations.
The webcasting will be done in 5,266 polling booths across four constituencies, Goel also said.
6 thousand GPS-fitted vehicles will be used to carry EVBM during the third phase of polls.
“More than 3,000 additional EVMs with VVPAT will be kept ready for the poll and 3,000 control units will be functional,” the CEO said.
Of the total voters, 41,00,544 are male, 40,48,436 are female and 111 are transgenders.
A total of 1,529 voters are above 100 years old while 2,10,177 are first-time voters of age 18-19.
Dhubri recorded the highest number of voters with 26,60,827 voters while Kokrajhar recorded the lowest number of voters with 14,84,571 voters.
With the third phase of polling, the festival of democracy will come to an end on Tuesday.
In the first and second phases of polling, Assam recorded 78.25% and 81.17% voting on April 19 and April 26 respectively.
