Assam: Body of Nepal citizen recovered from Umrangso coal mine
Rescue teams recovered the body of Rajen Sherch, a 42-year-old from Udaypur, Nepal, from the illegal coal mine at Umrangso, Dima Hasao district, Assam, on Wednesday morning.
The body was retrieved by NDRF and Army Para Divers around 8:45 am and handed over to the police.
The mine collapse on Monday morning trapped over a dozen miners, with high water levels inside the mine making rescue efforts difficult.
Of the 27 miners initially trapped, 10 escaped, leaving between 13 and 17 still unaccounted for. Rescue operations, involving the NDRF, SDRF, Army, Navy, and other agencies, are ongoing.
Police have arrested Punish Nunisa, the alleged mine owner, under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. The mine was operating illegally, and questions have been raised about the role of local authorities.
Rescue operations to locate the remaining miners are underway, while families remain in distress, hoping for any news.
