Assam Cabinet renames Karimganj as Sribhoomi, refers to Ravi Tagore
The Assam Cabinet has approved the renaming of Karimganj district to Sribhoomi district, aiming to align the name with the history, culture, and linguistic heritage of the local population.
“The name “Sribhoomi” ties the district to the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, a figure revered in the cultural and literary fabric of both Assam and Bengal. This highlights a shared cultural heritage while preserving the district’s identity in the context of historical significance,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
“Renaming places is part of a broader effort by the Assam government to ensure place names reflect the local cultural, linguistic, and historical context. The effort underscores the state’s dedication to preserving its distinct cultural identity,” he said.
“This was not a sudden decision but the result of months of deliberation and planning. The government identified place names perceived as misaligned with Assamese and Bengali cultural heritage or were not found in local lexicons,” he said.
