Assam CM inaugurates revamped LGBI airport terminal, enhancing travel experience
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the upgraded terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, ushering in a new era of enhanced passenger convenience, seamless travel, and modernized infrastructure.
The grand event, held at LGBI Airport in Borjhar, marked a significant milestone in improving air travel facilities in the region.
The redevelopment project includes a 700 sq. meter expansion in the passenger movement area to accommodate growing footfall. Departure gates have increased from five to seven, reducing wait times and streamlining the boarding process with 14 entry lanes. Traffic flow has been optimized with two additional entry points and FasTag-enabled access at all entry and exit points.
A dedicated zebra-crossing walking path from the parking area to the terminal has been introduced for pedestrian safety. Additionally, a traffic-free kerbside lane has been created, featuring 24/7 curated retail and dining outlets, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
The terminal now boasts a lush moss wall, adding a natural touch to the airport’s ambience. Furthermore, 47 digital screens will showcase the cultural heritage and scenic beauty of Northeast India, promoting Assam as a premier travel destination.
Speaking at the event, CM Sarma emphasized the rapid two-month completion of the upgrades ahead of Advantage Assam 2.0, ensuring the airport is primed to welcome global delegates. He also expressed optimism that the new terminal will be fully operational by year-end, positioning LGBI Airport as a key gateway to Southeast Asia.
The inauguration was attended by Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, Chief Airport Officer Ashwin Naronha, and other dignitaries. A spokesperson from Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) stated, “The redeveloped terminal is designed with passenger convenience at its core. As the gateway to the Northeast, LGBI Airport is set to drive economic growth, education, and employment in the region.”
