Assam CM participates in Bhumi Pujan for Palashbari-Sualkuchi Bridge over Brahmaputra
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presided over the Bhumi Pujan ceremony of the Palashbari-Sualkuchi bridge, a transformative project aimed at bolstering connectivity across the Brahmaputra. The ceremony marks a critical milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development.
The bridge, spanning 3.6 kilometres, is expected to be completed by June 2028. It features a 5.3-kilometre four-lane road from Palashbari and a 2-kilometre stretch to Sualkuchi, complemented by elevated roads to protect the surrounding wetlands.
The bridge will provide seamless connectivity between the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra, benefiting areas like Guwahati University, Tura in Meghalaya, and Goalpara.
Sarma emphasized that the project would catalyze economic growth, reduce travel time, and facilitate the implementation of government initiatives in regions such as Hajo, Ramdia, and Sualkuchi.
Broader Infrastructure Vision
Reflecting on Assam’s infrastructure strides under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Sarma highlighted significant achievements, including the Dhola-Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges.
He noted, “The Jorhat-Majuli bridge construction is ongoing. A tunnel road project connecting Gohpur and Golaghat, with a budget of Rs 12,000 crores, is set to begin in 2025. Plans for a 32-kilometer elevated corridor to safeguard Kaziranga’s wildlife during floods, with an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crores. Additional bridges between Morigaon-Darrang and six new bridges in the Barak Valley are in the pipeline.”
The Palashbari-Sualkuchi bridge, announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit in April 2023, is part of a broader development agenda that includes establishing an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Palashbari. Sarma highlighted the project’s swift progress, from foundation stone laying to land acquisition and tendering processes.
These initiatives exemplify the state’s progress and commitment to sustainable development. Sarma credited the advancements to collaborative efforts between the government and local communities, underscoring the importance of cooperative governance in transforming lives.
The event saw participation from notable figures, including Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, Environment and Forests Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, and MLAs Diganta Kalita, Hemanga Thakuria, and Nandita Das. Senior officials, including Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra and representatives from the Public Works Department, also attended.
Sarma concluded by stating that the Palashbari-Sualkuchi bridge symbolizes Assam’s ambitious vision for balanced regional growth. By overcoming logistical challenges and prioritizing community-driven initiatives, the state is setting an example of sustainable progress and inclusive development.
