Assam CM pushes for flood solutions, unveils major infrastructure projects in Dibrugarh

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, currently on a four-day visit to Dibrugarh, chaired a high-level meeting on Friday to tackle the persistent issue of artificial floods in the town. He also announced major infrastructure projects, including a new Assam Legislative Assembly building and MLA residences at Khanikar, Dibrugarh.
At a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Sarma discussed flood control strategies with officials from Dibrugarh Municipality, the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, and other relevant departments.
The Chief Minister directed officials to expedite the reconstruction of 15 culverts and ensure the rapid completion of a 9,385-meter-long drainage system from Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus to Sesa, at an estimated cost of Rs 45 crore.
Additionally, he ordered the civic body to take immediate steps for efficient garbage disposal, as clogged drains often lead to waterlogging. To ensure smooth execution, the District Commissioner was instructed to constantly monitor the progress of all flood-relief projects.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Jayanta Mallabaruah, Minister for Power Prasanta Phukan, Mayor of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Dr. Saikat Patra, Special Chief Secretary Syedain Abassi, Principal Secretary to the CM KK Dwivedi, and other senior officials.
Later in the day, CM Sarma inspected the site for the proposed Assam Legislative Assembly complex at Khanikar, Dibrugarh. He emphasized that the project must include all essential facilities and be completed by 2027. Once operational, two Assam Assembly sessions will be held in Dibrugarh annually.
Additionally, Sarma announced plans for a circuit house near the Assembly complex, featuring 75 rooms for government officials, further boosting Dibrugarh’s administrative infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of Khanikar Stadium’s construction, directing officials to expand the seating capacity to 25,000 to accommodate larger events.
In a separate meeting, Sarma assessed the implementation of welfare and infrastructure projects in Demow LAC. He assured that his government is committed to the timely completion of key development projects and ensuring the saturation of welfare schemes to promote holistic growth in the region.
Present at the meeting were MLA Susanta Borgohain, Special Chief Secretary Syedain Abassi, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, Principal Secretary to the CM KK Dwivedi, Sivasagar District Commissioner Ayush Garg, and other senior officials.
