Assam Cong vows to take down BJP in 2026: High command orders unity amid internal rifts
In a bold move ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Congress leadership has vowed to put internal differences aside and fight as one to dethrone the ruling BJP.
Led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah and Leader of Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia, a delegation met with the party’s high command in New Delhi, where they pledged unity in the battle against the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.
The two-hour-long meeting saw the presence of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and AICC general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal, among other senior leaders.
“We have taken a pledge before our high command to remove the corrupt BJP government in 2026,” Borah told reporters after the meeting.

He further revealed that the party has compiled a dossier of alleged corruption under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which has been submitted to the leadership and will be taken to the people before the elections.
Starting in March, Assam Congress plans to launch a statewide campaign, with central leaders actively participating in strategizing and mobilizing support. The meeting also included representatives from Karbi Anglong, the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Barak Valley, North Bank, Upper Assam, Central Assam, and South Bank, as they mapped out their election strategy.
However, internal discord remains a challenge. Congress has suffered setbacks in the last three elections, partly due to factionalism. Speculation is also rife that the party’s high command may soon replace Bhupen Kumar Borah with Gaurav Gogoi as the state president to energize the party ahead of the crucial polls.
With an aggressive campaign in the works and leadership changes on the horizon, the Assam Congress is gearing up for a high-stakes political battle against the BJP in 2026.
