Assam Governor inaugurates hydrotherapy complex at ASHA school, champions autism awareness and inclusion

In a heartfelt show of solidarity with children with special needs, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya visited ASHA School at 51 Sub Area, Narangi, on April 4 and inaugurated a state-of-the-art Hydrotherapy Complex at the ASHA Rehabilitation Center. The visit was part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness around autism, aligned with the global observance of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.
ASHA School, run by the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), is dedicated to supporting Divyangjan (children with special needs) by equipping them with life skills and education to help them lead more independent and dignified lives. The Governor’s presence reinforced the state’s commitment to inclusion and accessibility for all.
During his visit, Governor Acharya toured the school, interacted with students, parents, and faculty, and praised the efforts being made to create a nurturing and empowering environment for the children.
“We are all children of God. We may not choose our circumstances, but we can choose compassion, equality, and service. Indian culture teaches us to care for every individual with dignity. ASHA School is living that spirit every day,” the Governor said in his address.

The newly inaugurated Hydrotherapy Complex is expected to significantly enhance the school’s therapeutic offerings, using water-based therapy to improve the mobility, coordination, and overall well-being of the children. The Governor described it as a “valuable addition” that will deepen the school’s impact on physical and emotional development.
Acharya also underscored the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusivity and empowerment for every citizen, regardless of ability.
“Specially-abled individuals are not to be pitied but empowered. They are a vital part of our society and must be given every opportunity to grow and contribute. With the right resources and support, they can excel—and ASHA School proves that every day.”
He also highlighted schemes like the Deen Dayal Divyangjan Sahayata Yojana, which provides assistive devices and financial aid to specially-abled individuals in Assam, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives.

The event saw the participation of senior army officials including Lieutenant General Sanjay Mallik, GOC 101 Area; Major General R.D. Sharma, GOC 51 Sub Area; Brigadier Ravi Yadav, Deputy GOC 51 Sub Area; and ASHA School Principal Sampa Sen, along with parents and caregivers.
The Governor’s visit was a strong affirmation of the value of inclusive education, institutional support, and collective responsibility in building a society where every child—regardless of challenges—has a chance to thrive.
