Assam Governor urges Gauhati University to lead India’s educational renaissance at 32nd convocation

Assam Governor and Gauhati University Chancellor Lakshman Prasad Acharya called on Gauhati University to play a leading role in transforming India into a global hub of education, innovation, and values. Speaking at the 32nd Convocation Ceremony held on Friday, the Governor emphasized the university’s responsibility in realizing the vision of India as Vishwaguru—a world leader in knowledge.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and other dignitaries joined the convocation ceremony, where 3,744 students were conferred degrees, including 148 PhDs, 1,055 postgraduate, and 2,538 undergraduate degrees. Three eminent personalities—Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Dr. Tapan Kumar Saikia, and Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein—received honorary doctorates.
In his address, Governor Acharya urged Gauhati University to become an “active partner” in the national push to raise educational standards and expand academic collaboration. “The university must lead the way by building strong partnerships with IITs, NITs, and global institutions through innovation clubs and incubators,” he said.
He applauded Gauhati University for being the first in Northeast India to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and for embracing digital transformation through platforms like e-Samarth. Calling NEP 2020 a “game-changer,” he encouraged the university to act as a catalyst in bringing its reforms to life.
Governor Acharya also celebrated Assam’s intellectual heritage, invoking the legacies of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, Sri Sri Madhavdev, Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi, and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. He described the Gauhati University campus as “scenic and intellectually vibrant,” ideal for fostering innovation.
Addressing the graduating students, he said, “Your degrees are not the destination, but a stepping stone toward serving society and the nation. Let curiosity, compassion, and innovation be your compass.” Quoting Srimanta Sankardev, he reminded them that the company of the wise leads to enlightenment, and true education must build both intellect and character.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his convocation address, echoed similar sentiments, encouraging students to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress. Other speakers included TERI Director General Dr. Vibha Dhawan and Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta.
The convocation not only celebrated academic excellence but also reaffirmed Gauhati University’s rising stature in the national education landscape, with a strong call to action: lead with knowledge, innovate with purpose, and uplift with values.
