Assam Governor Urges Graduates to Lead with Purpose at Assam Women’s University Convocation

Assam Women’s University celebrated a major milestone today with its 4th Convocation Ceremony, drawing praise from Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who served as Chief Guest. Speaking to a packed audience of students, faculty, and dignitaries, the Governor lauded the university for its pioneering role in empowering women through higher education.
As the first women-exclusive public university in Assam, the institution has emerged as a beacon of academic excellence and social transformation. The Governor praised its ongoing mission to produce women leaders who are not only educated but also equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
“In our ancient culture, women have always held a place of high regard—from Gargi and Lopamudra to modern heroes like Savitribai Phule,” Governor Acharya said. “This university continues that legacy, shaping women who are prepared to lead, inspire, and drive positive change.”
A highlight of the event was the recognition of BHARTI (Building Holistic Advancement for Resilient and Ambitious Transformative Indian Women), a flagship initiative launched by the university to foster leadership and self-reliance in women. The Governor applauded the program’s focus on key sectors including health, education, environmental stewardship, and economic empowerment, calling it a step in the right direction for Viksit Bharat—a developed India envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Governor Acharya also emphasized the need for adaptability in today’s fast-evolving world. “Lifelong learning is no longer optional. It’s essential. Fields like AI, Data Science, and Green Tech are reshaping the future, and women must be at the forefront of this revolution,” he urged.

Citing the All India Survey on Higher Education (2021–22), he noted the encouraging trend of increasing female participation in higher education, with women now constituting more than 55% of all enrollments. “When a woman is educated, an entire family—and by extension, a society—benefits,” he said, quoting Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Reinforcing the National Education Policy 2020, the Governor highlighted the importance of flexibility, multidisciplinary learning, and real-world skills. He encouraged graduates to treat their degrees not just as achievements but as mandates for action. “Let your education be a force for good. True development is measured by the impact we create, especially for those who need it most.”

The university also conferred an honorary doctorate on Mrs. Anita Chetia for her distinguished service to society. A total of 333 students received their degrees during the convocation.
Among those present were Advisor to Higher Education Prof. Debabrata Das, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, and Prof. Anita Tamuli, former faculty member of Gauhati University, along with other academic leaders.

The event served not just as a celebration of academic success, but as a powerful reminder of the role education plays in shaping the future—especially when women lead the way.
