Assam Guv urges digital empowerment at Bhattadev University’s first convocation, calls for AI education

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya emphasized the need for digital empowerment among students while addressing the first convocation of Bhattadev University in Bajali on Saturday. He urged the institution to lead in equipping students with digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge, calling it essential for success in the 21st century.
“The 21st century is an era of digital revolution, offering endless opportunities for young minds. Bhattadev University, as a new institution, should take the lead in preparing students for the digital age,” the Governor said. He stressed that AI is transforming industries globally, from healthcare to transportation and entertainment to education, and urged faculty members to introduce AI-based courses.
Honouring Bhattadev, the father of Assamese prose, Acharya called on the university to balance modern scientific education with the teaching of Assamese and Sanskrit literature. He highlighted Bajali’s historical contributions to education, language, literature, and culture and reminded students of their responsibility to uphold this legacy.
The Governor praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to make higher education more accessible, inclusive, and high-quality. He noted that initiatives like digital innovation are bridging educational disparities and preparing students for the future. He encouraged graduates to apply their knowledge to bring positive changes to the state and the nation.
Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP), Acharya described it as a transformative framework based on India’s rich knowledge traditions. He urged students to use their education to address societal challenges and contribute to India’s progress toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy.

“You are now stepping into a new phase of life as graduates. I have full confidence that the skills and knowledge you have gained at Bhattadev University will help you seize emerging opportunities and contribute meaningfully to society,” Acharya told the students.
The Governor also lauded the university’s recent Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with prestigious research institutions, which he said would enhance research and development. He acknowledged Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s initiative, ‘Gunotsav,’ for improving the quality of education in Assam.
During the convocation, degrees were conferred on 1,920 students, including two PhDs, 496 postgraduates, and 1,422 undergraduates. Among them, 66 meritorious students received Gold Medals. Krishna Roy, a renowned theatre and cultural icon of Bajali, was conferred with an honorary Ph.D. degree (Honoris Causa) in recognition of her contributions to art and culture.
