Assam police resort to lathi charge, arrest two at Langpih
SHILLONG: Two persons were arrested while few others including women were injured in a clash between villagers and the Assam police at Langpih area along the inter-state border in West Khasi Hills District on Thursday.
The incident took place at Umwali village, near Langpih when the workers of the M/S Dhar Construction had gone there for erection of electrical lines and service connection.
District Police Chief BJ Laloo said the Assam police personnel also reached the spot to stop the work and two persons were arrested.
“This caused the locals from the village to protest and started pelting stones to which the Assam police resorted to lathi charge,” Laloo said.
He said few persons have been reported to be seriously injured in the lathi charge-incident.
The SP informed that the In-charge of Langpih has proceeded to the place of occurrence and SDPO Mawshynrut has also been detailed and asked to reach there and take stock of the situation and submit report.
It may be mentioned here that as many as four Khasi villagers were killed and eight others were injured in a police firing incident at Langpih on May 14, 2010.
