Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya emphasized the enduring cultural, historical, and spiritual ties between Assam and Odisha as the state celebrated Odisha Day (Utkal Divas) at the Shri Shri Madhavdev International Auditorium in Guwahati on April 1. He highlighted the strong bond between the two states, which has been reinforced through mutual celebrations like Odisha Day in Assam and Assam Divas in Odisha.
Speaking at the event, Governor Acharya underlined the importance of Foundation Day celebrations in recognizing a state’s journey to full statehood while showcasing its cultural heritage, progress, and aspirations. He also acknowledged the sacrifices of those who contributed to Odisha’s rich history.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for promoting inter-state cultural exchanges under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative. He remarked that such initiatives foster national unity and help states learn from each other’s progress.
Tracing the deep-rooted ties between the two states, Acharya noted that Assam and Odisha’s connections date back to ancient times, particularly the Buddhist era, when travelling monks facilitated cultural exchanges. He also highlighted the spiritual bond formed in the 15th century when Assam’s revered saint Srimanta Sankardeva visited Puri and was deeply influenced by its spiritual traditions.
The Governor also spoke about the migration of Odia workers to Assam’s tea gardens during British rule, which further strengthened people-to-people relations. He mentioned legendary Assamese writer Lakshminath Bezbaruah’s contributions to literature and his time spent in Odisha’s Sambalpur, where his legacy continues to be cherished.
Hailing Odisha’s rapid growth, particularly in the tourism sector, Acharya praised the state’s achievements and potential for future development. He stressed that the deep-rooted bond between Assam and Odisha should be used progressively to drive India’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
The Odisha Day celebrations featured vibrant cultural performances that showcased the shared traditions of the two states, reinforcing the unity in diversity that defines India. The Governor extended his warm greetings to the people of Odisha and the Odia community residing in Assam, acknowledging their contributions to the state’s cultural fabric.
