Assam reports first HMPV case in 10-month-old baby
Assam has recorded its first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, detected in a 10-month-old baby currently receiving treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
Health officials confirmed on Saturday that the child is in stable condition.
State Health Minister Ashok Singhal reassured the public, emphasizing that the state is fully prepared to manage any potential outbreak. “We remain vigilant and ready to act according to guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) should case numbers increase nationally,” Singhal said, adding that there is “no cause for alarm” at present.
Drawing on Assam’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Singhal highlighted the state’s readiness to address emerging health threats. “Our doctors, nurses, and paramedics demonstrated exceptional dedication during the pandemic, and with this robust healthcare system, we are confident in handling any health crisis,” he stated.
First identified in 2001, HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like illness to severe respiratory complications, particularly in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), it is spread through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces.
While officials have refrained from issuing advisories, they urge citizens to maintain good hygiene practices and monitor any respiratory symptoms. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure swift containment if necessary.
