Assam STF busts counterfeit currency ring; Rs 6.87 lakh seized, two arrested near Meghalaya border
Assam’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested two individuals involved in counterfeit currency circulation, including one resident from Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya. The operation, conducted on November 13 in Khanapara, was aimed at curbing fake currency activity.
Acting on intelligence about a counterfeit currency ring in Khanapara, police raided the area. The suspects attempted to flee in a Maruti Suzuki A-Star with plate number AS-02-F-8100, but were intercepted near Kainadhara on the APSC Road close to Dispur Police Station. The accused were identified as Md. Sahil Ali (21) from Karaibil, Bhaoria Bhitha under Chhaygaon Police Station and Harsh Wahlang (20) from Baridua, Khanapara under Ri Bhoi District.
During interrogation, Md. Sahil Ali revealed to involvement and led police to his rented residence in 9 Mer, Baridua, Ri Bhoi District. Assam Police seized Rs 6,87,500 in fake currency, a counterfeit currency printing machine, a mobile phone, brown-taped currency bundles, and materials resembling Rs 500 notes, along with a two-wheeler.
Assam Police continue to investigate this expanding counterfeit currency network, which is increasingly prevalent along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
