Assam thunderstorm toll: 4 dead, 52,899 affected; cyclonic storm to continue in North East
Four persons including two minors were killed due to a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall which struck Assam during the past 24 hours, an official report of Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Monday.
A four-year minor boy identified as Samim Mandal was killed in a boat capsized incident in the South Salmara-Mankachar district while another 17-year boy identified as Pintu Chauhan (17) was killed in a lightning strike at Donka in West Karbi Anglong district.
Two others are: Sakhi Begum Laskar (30, Raighat, Cachar district and Rupram Basumatary (46), Mazbat, Udalguri district were also killed due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes respectively.
Six injured persons have been admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
Two persons were also reportedly missing in the boat capsize incident at Nepurealaga village under Sukchar police station in South Salmara Mankachar district on Sunday evening.
“A total of 52,899 people of 919 villages under 66 revenue circles of 22 districts were affected by the thunderstorm,” the ASDMA said.
The affected districts are Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup Metro, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Cachar.
Union home minister Amit Shah called up chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the situation in the state and assured him of all assistance.
Shah also appealed to the BJP workers in the three states to provide every possible help to the affected people during this hour of distress.
Sarma said, “His assurance of full support and assistance for relief and rehabilitation on behalf of the Govt of India is deeply appreciated.”
“Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is constantly monitoring the impact caused by heavy rains and storm that hit the state yesterday evening,” CMO posted on X.
“The State Emergency Operation Centre is coordinating 24X7 with district commissioners of the 10 affected districts,” the CMO said.
“Following preliminary assessment we regret to inform the unfortunate loss of 4 lives. 919 villages have been affected by yesterday’s inclement weather,” the CMO added.
A detailed assessment is going on in the field figures may be updated in the late evening, they said.
406 houses were damaged fully and 14,227 houses partially due to the storm, the ASDMA said.
1.2 quintals of rice, 7 quintals of dal, 2.45 litre of mustard oil and 0.065 quintals of salt were distributed among the affected people.
The storm also damaged 13 Anganwadi centres – 2 in Sivasagar, 3 in Nalbari, 7 in Golaghat and 1 in Karimganj district.
59,864.85 m AAA conductor, 1700 m LT conductor and 800 m HT conductor, 39 102 electric poles 7.5 and 19 PSC pole 8.5, 48 LT poles, 13 HT poles and 3 transformers of APDCL were damaged by the storm.
The thunderstorm further damaged 9 schools- 1 in Sivasagar, 2 in Darrang, 1 ME School in Nalbari, 4 in Golaghat and 1 in Karimganj district, the ASDMA said.
151 cattle shed and 234 huts were also damaged, they also said.
Huts, schools, shops, Anganwadi centres and other institutions have been damaged across the state, while scores of vehicles were damaged when trees fell on them.
An official said that hundreds of visitors were stranded inside Garbhanga Reserve Forest near Guwahati till the early hours as the entire road was blocked by uprooted trees.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Bihar at 0.9 km above mean sea level. The cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam persists and is now seen at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
“The north-south trough from east Bihar to north Bay of Bengal across Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal at 0.9 km above mean sea level has become less marked,” the IMD said in its weather forecast.

“Thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds with speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. Thunderstorms and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya. Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya,” it added.
